James Hammond was one of the great typewriter pioneers, beginning work on his remarkable machine in the late 1870s. It was patented in 1880 and was first manufactured in 1881.

This typewriter sold for $100, the normal price for a full keyboard typewriter of the day. In comparison, a horse drawn carriage sold for between $40 and $70.

$100 for a typewriter compared to $40 to $70 for a carriage. It is incredible how new technology has such a high price tag when it first comes out and then lowers rather quickly in price till it is obsolete. This is a really neat looking typewriter. It has an artsy quality to it with the wood and the curves.
