Take a close look at the D on this penny. It is slanted to the right pointing at 1-o-clock. It also has a shadow D southeast of it. Doubled mintmark. Also look at the cheek bone. It is way to high & runs into the eye. The beard just above the bow tie is smeared also. On reverse in the E & S of states & the O in of, are flat weak strikes. Hmmmm, are my eye's goin bad, or do U see what I see? Hey AC Dwyer I need U on this one...........Any info welcome!

You might have something here... or it just might a common error, not listed in the red book in 1986 pennies, so i'm thinking this isn't a usual error.

I noticed something with the 1986 D pennies when they came out as well. The letters "S" on "STATES" and the "o" on "of" just over E-PLURIBUS are filled in or are barely visible. I've noticed this error on pennies all the way up to 1996 D, but not since then. Also the 1986 D had numurous off-center strikes as well.

Hey,...I'm fairly certain that your culprit is: "I.M.D.P" -( Internal Metal Displacement Phenomenon )- That wonky subaquatic appearance is apparent on both the obverse and reverse of your coin.
I have a number of Lincoln '88 D's that each presnt this same distinctive effect; though on mine only the reverse is affected. Also, check your coin for rotation. An article by Mr. Ken Potter finally gave -(what was to me, anyhow )- this obscurely esoteric metallurgical term / event a name: IMPD. Hope this helps,... coming three years down the road 'n all.

One of our 1986 D pennies has the same errors as described in the original comment/article (slanted 'D' pointing at 1 o'clock, high cheek bone, and finally, it APPEARS to have the same chin error, almost seems to cast a "double chin" on Lincoln)... Does anyone know the value of them though?

I have one like that but all the letters and date are all inverted.
      Is it worth anything?

I have 10 1986 and 1986d off center and edge strike lincolns. Im guessing there is a common issue with die striking and metal composition of the planchettes or........

WELL I DID NOT SEE ANY ERROR DATA ON PGS SITE, SO IT NEEDS TO BE GRADED AND SENT TO AUCTION.THAT WILL SET PRECEDENT FOR A POSSIBLE HIGH END ITEM.

If it is of a good quality mint it might be worth something. But if the coin is not a good quality mint or not a collector item, might not be worth a lot. But if it has sentimental value to you it would be priceless to you. And some people just collect because they like coins. This kid in the movie Stand By Me collected pennies in a jar. They were not worth much but it was something he loved to do. If you really like it just keep it. Start your own collection with that little penny. I started mine with a poker chip I thought was a peso. But I still love it, even if it is just a poker chip. I have a few more coins now. Some are not worth anything to a hardcore coin collector. But I like them. And that is what is at the true heart of collectors. They don’t collect for money all the time. They collect because they love it.
