I wonder if Thelma is going to read this? Thelma and her husband Peter are great mates who collect Italian Pottery and Scandinavian glass. They have a stall at the Collector's Market here in Sydney and Thelma has recently shown me her copy of Mark Hill's new book on Italian ceramics: Alla Moda. Last month I took along a couple of items that I wanted Thelma to have, one of which was a De Simone plate.

Having said "Hello" to Pete and Thelma I went wandering around the market and came across another piece of De Simone's work. You lose one and you pick one up! I was very cheeky and tried to haggle with the dealer but she sold it to me for half of her asking price, so I was very happy.

To quote myself from another posting on De Simone:
"I have collected a few of the pieces by De Simone over the years. I like the vibrancy of this faience/faenza. De Simone is a firm begun by Giovanni De Simone in Palermo Sicily in the early fifties in the area around Piazza Leoni 2 ( the Jewish Quarter of this historic city). In the early days the work was mostly home-wares and decorative tiles in the traditional manner. But at the end of the fifties they were producing a much more colourful and humourous range of articles characterized by thick glazes. The firm then set up in Rome as well because of their successes where the family business continues today."

This bottle/vase is a great glimpse into life in Palermo. I love the triangular shape that gives three different perspectives of the scene.

If anyone can give me any details about the marks the bottom I'd be happy to hear from you.

Hi V, I have a number of DiSimone pieces. I recently picked up a double fish plate. (Okay for a dollar). I also had a orange chicken plate which I sold quickly at the flea market last year. I believe I have another vase rumbling around somewhere.
I love the colors, and the life of DiSimone but also find them a bit off putting. Not sure why. Anyway, if you want them...

Cool - love it... one of my mom's ancestors (F. Mollica) married a di Simone (2nd wife) in the 1780s... they lived on Ustica, just North of Sicily and South of Naples in the AEolian Islands. Interesting to me the connection of both surnames to ceramics.

Hi beyemvey! Mollica? la Real Fabbrica Ferdinandea? All part of the Kingdom of Naples is Ustica etc. Mollica is one of The "Names". They even bought out the Cacciapuoti moulds later on. Keeping it all in the "famiglia". Or a case of mixing with the same crowd. Fabulous!
