The woman I got this from said her sister brought this back from Thailand.

It is large (see pic with hand for scale) and has a rectangular hole carved in it's back, with a lid that has a small toad knob. There is what looks like a drain hole in the bottom of the compartment. Looks as if there has been something burned in it.

Any ideas as to what, where, why or how much?

I bought one similar in Grass Valley, CA this month, November 2011. The tag said Canadian. First stricking impression is these are Native American with the style being similar, but aspects of mine lead me to believe they were meant to decieve as mine has some dirt worked into joits of the carving. However, the heft of the wood, form, patina still and first impressions lead me to believe these are Far North Navtive American. At the least they are rather unusual. Snuff or tobacco boxes? I paid $140 for the one I got.

      scandinavian_pieces,
I liked your vintage family pictures. They remind me of the monumental task that awaits me in scanning photos from my Grandmother. Some of them, the history of which may be lost.
Like your Grandad, I too have always loved airplanes.
