This is a quarter plate ruby ambrotype (on ruby glass) of a New York soldier.

He wears the early war NY shell jacket with high dome buttons and shoulder tabs.

Additionally, he is wearing a Chausseur or Zouave type hat. I have not yet IDd the specific regiment, but may be able to in the future.

What makes the image especially collectable (and valuable) is what appears to be the AMES DAHLGREN KNIFE/ BAYONET.

Reproduction of these images in any form is not authorized.

I will be checking out your other images. Is there any reason why the "US" on the belt buckle in this image is emphasized the way it is?

Gold tinting is common on buckles and buttons. SOME photographers chose to add lettering instead.

This is a ruby ambrotype, so the lettering is mirrored (and NOT readable) in actual appearance just as it would be in a tintype or daguerreotype.

If you notice, this soldier has worn his buckle upside down as well. It puts the "S" on the correct side and makes the "U" appear like an "N".

Some collectors have erroneously attributed these upside down buckles to Confederate soldiers. Instead it was simply a photographer trying to make the subject and his accouterments appears as correct as possible.
