Please help me identify what in the heck this is! It is Sterling Silver. It is hollow. It does NOT open in any way. It hangs on a sterling silver chain. The center of the chain has a large ring (3/8 across) that is NOT a spring lock. Ther eis some really weird mark tat I cannot read on it. It has hammered decorations on it. ON the ends of it, it looks like a the end of a sausage witht that starbuest design like cheap hot dogs in unnatural casings. It is 3 inches long. HELP! I have had this for YEARS, and I still can't figure out what it is or what it is used for! Hang a hankie on it? A serviette? A cravat?

I think it just about has to open -- otherwise, whats the point, unless it was crafted around something inside. (:-)

the opening paragraph does say the piece is about 3" long so from the pics I'd estimate it would be close to 3/4" diameter or so. Looking closely at the images I cannot make out an open seam indicating a separation for a cap to be removed. Maybe just me, but can't imaging that a match would easily strike on a spherical end with this design. The size does seem consistent with a match safe/holder; the chatelaine idea does make sense.

It IS a gen-yoo-ine mystery! I assure you - it does not open! I don't believe it ever did - there is no secondary solder. The chain is attached to the body of the piece, not the ends. I thought it might be part of a chantelain, too. To hang a kerchief on possibly? Pull the train of a dress through to keep it clean? The 'sausage' starburst ends would not light a match very effectively. All the decoration is hammered in using little stamps. I used to dop leather tooling (years ago) and the decorations remind me of leather tooling dies. Measuring the width, it is 3/4 inches across. I bought at estate sale, and no one there knew what it was, either!

LOL - I sure had a lot of typos yesterday. I was into about 16 hours into nicotene withdrawl. Brutal! But I'm still going strong on my second day! Thanks for trying to help me figure this mystery out!

What about a man's chantelain? I thought maybe you would hang you napkin on it while eating if you hung from around your neck? Or a cravat-typr tie? I thibnk it is older thanVictorian.

My mind went from sex to drugs!!! I love it! Maybe a handle? Hooks onto a Sterling chain leash to a diamond studded collared miniature poodle! haha, I need to know now! If you find out donboyd49@gmail.com! Or let me know on one of my posts! I really love it!!

I also think it's a prayer cylinder/amulet, having looked at other photos on Google Images.

I was about to comment pray capsule, but seen it has been suggested. I've answered your query on the Roy Roger watch, but did so there so others with similar question would see my response.

Celiene - Been looking for this since I saw the recently posted silver cylinder. Wondered if you though this could be your cylinder:

It must be. Maybe it was made in the European market, since it looks very westernized to me, with its little flowers. And the chain throws me off. It would have to hang from another chain around a person's neck, and that would look weird. (to me!)

Well...that only took three years ;>)
