In honor of all the beautiful and noble dogs who presented at Westminster this week… I post this beautiful old silvered bronze art medal(*), designed by Belgian medal artist René Pirart for the Club De Chien De Dames Bruxelles. Pictured are the Papillon (note "Butterfly" ears), the Griffon Bruxellois (center), and the Schipperke.
The Brussels Griffon/Griffon Bruxellois was very popular in late nineteenth century Belgium. Queen Marie Henriette was enchanted by the little lion-hearted dog, and she regularly attended the dog shows in Belgium. The Queen and her daughter also bred the Brussels Griffon, and helped bring the breed to international popularity.
I don't know the following: in what year the medal was designed, for how many years it was issued, and what purpose this particular medal served. Often one finds circular dog show medals that feature a show rank on the reverse. These were given as awards. On this medal, there is no writing on the reverse.
Pirart (1887 - after 1952) was a superb medalist. You can see one other of his works at the following site.

(* ) Strictly speaking, medals are supposed to be circular. This oblong medal might be called a plaquette.
Note: This is not sterling, but it is silvered.
Thank you very much, AR8Jason, for your kind appreciation!!! : )

Thank you very much, inky, for your very kind words!!! Yes, I have to admit that it is delightful. It's even nicer with the higher resolution photo, which I'll send you shortly. Do please take care, and best wishes for a splendid St. Valentine's Day to the Family Inky, and please, a little treat for Monty, too! : D
Best wishes for a splendid St. Valentine's Day to ye all!!! : )
I hope you are having a wonderful Valentines Day too dear mikko!...;-)
Greetings, dear inky! Yes, I had a very fine St. Valentine's Day, thank you! Many greetings, a visit, a beautifully wrapped box of gourmet brownies from Saks Fifth Avenue, a box of beautifully wrapped gourmet chocolate chip cookies from Saks Fifth Ave., and then today, a beautiful pink Fenton butterfly alighting on branch! I am quite spoiled rotten! : 0 Oh!
I broke out in a grin over your last email! : D
The little dog is a "Papillon" - "Butterfly" dog, so named for his ears.
The middle dog - whom you referred to as a demon dog, or some such - is a lovely little friend, the Brussels Griffon. He's brave, but unless you're a rodent or villain, he's a sugar muffin.

The dog that reminded you of the German Shepherd in another Belgian dog, the Schipperke. He is a brave, bold, and strong companion!, somewhat similar to the German Sherherd (or spitz), but smaller and much more headstrong. Now, HE IS sometimes referred to as a "little black devil" - or "little black fox". Definitely not as easy to train as a GS, though I've no doubt you would train him perfectly in short order. : )

Thank you very much, toracat, for your kind appreciation!!! : )
Deservedly spoilt and what more could you want than a lovely box of chocolates..mmmmm! ...your art medal is a lovely and I thank for the image.... and yes! I would! have "little black devil" trained in no time, and as for "Butterfly" ears I did have a long haired Chiwawa with "butterfly ears just like this one too! she was the prettiest little thing I will have to find a photo and send it to you!...:-)
Thank you, thank you!!! for your very kind comments, inky. Oh, a Chiwa with 'Christmas tree' ears? Delightful! Thank you, I shall certainly look forward to seeing a picture of her! I saved onto my hard drive the delightful photo of your pet kangaroo eating grapes that she helped herself to from your refrigerator. Door wide open for all to see, as Tess feasted on the choice produce before her. 'No plate needed, thank you', Tess said to Mum, 'Floor is fine.' Flowers and friends of many animal species flourish in your home!....Take care, dear inky! : D
Ahoy, there, mustangtony! Look what Scandi just discovered - it looks like the bird that serves as your avatar has been nominated by the Audubon Society for 'best costume design' of the year. He's got some stiff competition, so you might want to support him. : )

I LOVE this, miKKo and HELLO to you, my friend! It really speaks to me because I inherited a Papillon puppy that had belonged to my mother. That dog was such a delight. Always happy and lively, even as she aged. My father had a Schipperke when he was a child and another later in his life. He was a bit ... um.. intense for me, but he was certainly a loyal friend for my father. ( actually I was always terrified of the Schipperke! *L*)
Hi MiKKoChristmas11, just wondering if you are still on this site, and have this pin. My wife has been showing\breeding Schipperkes for 25 plus years and I have been looking for several for this item. Just curious if you would be interested in selling it for far more than it is worth. can't hurt to ask.
