This bowl has been in the family from the 1970s, when my father got it as a Chtistmas present from some patient...
I have to confess I found out who the designer was, but didn't keep the data properly and I have to start looking for it.
I am pretty sure it is from Humppila and it's not from Pertti Santalahti...
I hope someone can help!

Ok, mistery solved!!! I also asked for identification on this item at the Finnish glass lovers group at FB... and got an answer within 10 minutes!
The bowl was designed by Kaija Aarikka fro Humppila.
According to Wikipedia:
"Helena Kaija Aarikka Ruokonen (born February 3, 19xx -I am a gentleman-) is a Finnish designer and entrepreneur. Established in 1954 Aarikka Ltd's artistic director since 1954 worked to combine Aarikka, designed by jewelery, toys and household use and ornamental objects play of the mind and a strong sense of the shape of the tree skillful and versatile use."
By the way, "Heiniä kainalossa" translates as "hay under his arm"... it sounds pretty poetic! In any case the bowl looks like a bundle of hay!!

how big is it? it looks enormous!
I think it's about 24 cm high... I'll confirm this next week (this one's not catalogued yet), but I've just seen simmilar ones standing 17 and 10 cm. tall

@vet. It's amazing the great designs she can make departing from the most simple of shapes and materials. That wooden jewelery is so beautiful! I guess the kind of stuff I'd wear was i a woman... :)

By the way, cobalt, thanks for the compliments on the pictures. I have to say this one has always been an "easy model"... just a little light from the background will make all the decoration outstand from the glass walls!
I have to say this is quite a special item for me, as it's the ones with the most family memories. I don't know why my mother never used it, probably because having four kids in the house she thought she'd rather keep it in a high, hidden place for us not to break it, but everytime I had to pick up the Christmas decorations I liked to take a look at it! Then mi sister took it with her when she moved to her own place... she used it to hold a plant pot with one of those plants that needs lots of water. When i started collecting glass I "let her knew" it would look great with the rest of the stuff... wow, she gave it to me at once! :)
By the way, the name translates more like "Hay in armpit" and it comes from a Finnish expression. "when you work hard at a hay field and then you go to sleep and you feel like you have hay dust everywhere .... or if you just have been picking hay and carrying it" :) .

The design seems to really work on this form rather than the plates.
The curves suit her aesthetic.

I tried and believe me, it's awfully difficult!!! So far I search interesting glass pieces in Finnish but... that's all!!! :)

It's funny how she made this amazing organic designs and then, when she created her own company, she made everything departing from simple geometric shapes. My guess is that she sort of designed this, and your plate, under the influence of Wirkkala's work. This kind of organic frosted glass was the big trend around 1968 (when Ultima Thule was created) and it lasted for quite a few years.
I believe she did or was under Tapios influence of design as well !!! it was very popular , that ice llok and design back then , and I love that look.
