This is a composition Shirley Temple doll from the 1930s. She was not made by Ideal but by an unidentified company that made copy cats. These copy cats were more affordable during the Depression. She's dressed in an original outfit and much of the paint (including nail polish) has not worn off. When laid down, her eyes close.

Very nice . I loved Shirley Temple Movies :-) Is she a marked Ideal Shirley ?

Her movies are adorable. :) From what I can see there are no markings. Am I correct in assuming that she was still made by Ideal even if there are no markings?

Hi Nicole . I thought she was a Shirley Temple look a like doll but wanted to ask in case I was wrong . They are always marked Ideal Shirley Temple . many companies made Shirley look a likes , I knew her dress was on a Ideal original . She is still wonderful . But Ideal help exclusive rights to make her dolls and she did sue a few companies along the way .
Produced from 1934 through the ’30s, the dolls came in sizes from 11 inches to 27 inches. The outfits varied and extra clothes could be purchased separately. Many of the original outfits on the dolls were fashioned from clothing worn by Shirley in her movies.

While very popular with the public, this was a period of history when many people were struggling financially. The Ideal Shirley dolls were beautiful, but they were also expensive compared to “dime store” dolls. To meet this need, many copycat Shirley dolls were produced by other companies. With few exceptions, most of these dolls were not as well made as the Ideal Shirley, but they looked enough like Shirley to satisfy a little girl
Her mohair could be re curled and she would like new :-) Love her

I'm disappointed that she's a copy cat but I agree- she's still nice. :) Thanks so much for all of the information! Where would an Ideal mark be located if she wasn't a copy cat? I only checked the back of her neck.

Nicole check her mid back it should be marked there also .
I did a few articles on Shirley Temple dolls that were published since I loved her as a little girl :-) A few of the dolls I had in my collection were in book. I no longer have any . I also collected her dress's by Ideal at one time . She is timeless .

I didn't take her outfit off but I put my finger between the buttons/seam and ran it along her back to see if I could hit a raised or indented area. There was nothing on her mid back (I also looked and didn't see anything). Oh well, at least she's still vintage! Wow, you are a very accomplished doll aficionado. :) I love your collection!
