This is a small locket size tintype (cut to size CW era) of a Confederate soldier.
His collar clearly has a single bar insignia of a 2nd Lieutenant. Part of the gilt tint has worn away and the bar (or stripe) can be clearly seen below the tinting.
Caution should be exercised when acquiring Confederate images. Several times, I have observed modern tinting on a civilian image to create a Confederate Soldier! Additionally, the often heard adage of gray uniforms or non standard uniforms is often misused to attach a Confederate attribution.
The incentive is great. A standard Sixth plate (tintype) bust shot of a Union soldier is readily available at less than $100. The same shot of a Confederate will start at about $500!

Thanks for looking and commenting tlmbaran.
I used to collect Confederate images-- probably had about 75- 100 at one time. In the mid to late 90s, I sold most of them.
This is the last (I think) in my collection. I got it in a Bowling Green KY antique mall for $35 in the early 90s. At that price I can afford to keep it.

Ive got a picture of a union soilder :) its actually my profile picture, great post btw! Ive been looking around for condederate stuff while antiquing and all i ever find is union, lol ohh well someday ill find something confederate
Thanks for looking and commenting p....
Another myth to watch for is the "upside down US buckle". I often see images of soldiers in complete Union uniforms attributed as Confederate due to an upside down buckle. Unfortunately, many dealers believe this one.

Wish I could find our pix of our great, great etc., etc. grandfather on the Strickland side of the family, in his Confederate uniform with flintlock. Sister has also misplaced our grandfather's .32 Colt Pocket Positive .
Sounds like a great photograph!
Nice to have family pieces. That would be a very valuable image as well.
