Solid Brass Container, top flips up, has one hinge and inside is what looks to be a brass candle holder(best guess?). 4" across, 1 1/4" high, weighs 11.6 ounces. I bought this at the Good Will over a year ago because I love brass items and didn't know what it was and I still don't. No markings of any kind but it is really cool and I am sure it serves a really great purpose. Ash Tray? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

I have an item in my collection with a very similar design, although it looks very different. People have suggested mine to be a jam or mustard serving dish. Here is mine

My has the same flip top and a removable insert. Different looking but same function?

Thank you for the idea of a serving dish but I think the inside hole(1.5") is much too small. Also, the top does not open as wide as yours, that is one reason I dismissed it as a candle holder because most likely the lip would hit the candle, unless it was a very small candle. A tea light does not fit into it and the hole is too big for most standard candles. Thanks again.
