I purchased the remnants of an Estate, and to my delight, I discovered this incredible Train Set. I have always loved model trains, with Lionel being the dominant interest in my collection. I immediately began my research to determine if this was a true modeling treasure, or just another old forgotten toy.
I will share, to the best of my ability, what I have learned of this Magnificient Model Train Set:
It is an American Flyer Mechanical Train, Manufactured in Chicago, Ill.
Actual date of Issue is Still to be determined; (Will return to this later)
Description: Panther; Engine number is 2323, Model 2.
Set consists of Engine; Coal Tender; United States Mail,Railway Post Office Car; Passenger (Jefferson) Car; 10 sections of track approx. 10.25" long; asst rail mount shims.
The color theme is Orange with Green outlines, Black lettering.
Engine is approx. 6.50" Long; o-4-o Wheel pattern; both of rear axle wheels are broken; appears to be cast metal, and very brittle. (looking for replacements). Clock-Work Driven (wind-up), works perfectly.
Coal Tender is approx. 4.50" long; perfect condition, no scratches, dents, or missing parts.
Passenger Car, & Postal Car are approx. 5.5" Long;perfect condition, no scratches, dents, or missing parts.
There is no damage, rust, or any deterioration of any of the components of the set.
AGE? I have not been able to find any specific data, pictures, or exact descriptions to match this model. Articles I have read, indicate that American Flyer began production of Electric powered models about 1917 to compete with Lionel, but the articles do not say that production of the Clock-Work models was dis-continued. Most of the models I have viewed on various auction sites simply say "Pre-War". Any information about this model would be appreciated.
The box is extremely nice, all corners intact, all corner staples secure. there are two litho labels, with slight wear but intact and firmly attached.
Please share any information that will correct, or improve the factual description of this Train Set.
I sincerely hope the Photos are enjoyed by all who visit this post.

Additional Info: Coal Tender is Number 120
    Passenger is Number 1107
    Postal Car is Number 1108
