Greetings: I purchased this charger at a chicken house auction in Southern Delaware. The auctioneer threatened to drop and break this "ugly" treasure on the ground unless someone offered him at least $1 for it - I had to pay twice that for it ($2) - bummer! This style of Palissy Ware / majolica charger is named after the French potter, Bernard Palissy (1510-1590). It is stamped/signed on the reverse "Jose A. Cunha, Portugal, Caldas Rainha." It is a generous 15+" across.

It is suprising that such unbelievable bargains still regularly appear at auctions. How was it described? Was it an uncatalogued auction?

Scott: No, the auction was not catalogued. It was a very local country auction that no longer exists. The auctioneer had no clue as to what this was.
It is ashame that they aren't still in business. Thankfully there are still some auction hold outs that don't use the internet or catalogue their items!

I know very little about ceramics, so please pardon my question. : ) I have never before seen a charger that featured a design that projected so high above the plate platform. Are you sure that this is a charger?....It is quite magnificent! Thank you!
Hi MiKKo: When I think charger, I think large plate. Of course, with the high relief, this piece was never intended to hold food/fruit/etc., but rather is ornamental, usually hung on a wall - hence the holes in the back for hanging. Regards.
this is lovely nootch and what a lovely post you did -- i love auctions and auctioneers they are so humorous -- use to go to farm sales in nebraska and bid on 8n ford tractor equipment -- it was soooooooooo cold but as my knowledge grew as to what i was looking for -- the farmers would come around and show me all their goodies ask my opinion etc etc as we slurped down the hot coffee and wiped the frozen ice from our faces -- have a great weekend
