I have a small candia silberiris Spiraloptisch (posted earlier) so I thought this larger dark green to clear decor would go nicely with the other one.
Bought at a small auction in Ft.Myers, Florida. They had no idea what it was so it sold reasonably low.
Polished pontil. 6 inches high.
Photo 3 : Compare shapes (thanks to Craig).

Another one of my favorite decors. The shape of yours is very close to that of one of mine, but the rims on them are treated differently. I'm going to see if I can find them in The Book.
I found mine, 1905 II-2792. The closest I found to yours is 1905 II-2117, Creta mit dunkelgrün verlaufend spiraloptisch. The shape is very close, but the rim in the drawing has 4 folds, whereas yours has 5. I did find a similarly-shaped form with 5, but the base was wider, so the transition was not as great.
David : Thanks for the ID info.
BELLIN68 : Thanks for the comment.
Nice snag Frank.
ks85 : It's mint....no water stain.
Kyle, he said this was from a small auction (it sounds like a live thing not ebay) are you sure this is the same piece?
Greatsnowyowl & ks85 : I couldn't understand Kyle's comment because there is no water stain. I contacted the auction before bidding and they said it was in "mint unused condition". Sooooo....I thin Kyle is thinking of another piece. And it did not come from Ebay.
Kyle : Yes, Harrison Auction. It must be that they confused the vase with another piece. They didn't even know it was Loetz of course. They must have fainted when it soared above their opening $20.
Just so Kyle doesn't think he's losing it...I also saw this piece and remember some comment about a water stain. Though it wasn't the description that bothered me, it was LA. I have yet to use my account there for bidding. Some of the auction houses seem a bit iffy and I'm a chicken!
Congrats to you on your bravery and the great buy! :)
bkirks : Someone at the auction house must have messed up on the lot numbers regarding "water stain" and then they just kept it going with other inquiries. They told me "mint unused condition". And it is absolutely perfect with no water stain.
JayHow : Very simple.....there are several listing websites. Auction houses list their upcoming auctions showing all lots. So you go to one of these sites and search what you are interested in.
Probably the biggest one is LIVEAUCTIONEERS.COM. There is also ARTFACT.COM and many others.
Nice addition to your collection, Frank. The spiraloptisch decor is one of our favorites. We are vacationing in Ft Myers and had hoped to get to the auction in time to examine the piece before bidding on it but our drive from Illinois took us one hour longer than we planned so we called the auction house and left a bid. We were the under bidders and you were right, they were a bit surprised by the amount and asked us twice if we were sure that was the amount we wanted to bid. I am glad this great piece went to such a good home!
From my experience LA ends up being more expensive than other venues. hidden costs in shipping can be pretty devastating sometimes as well as added on costs from the auction house and no guarantees on condition. I try not to buy from that site. If an item is especially rare or goes very cheaply it's one thing but usually they go for very dear prices compared to other places.
LoetzDance : Thanks for the comment. I'm sure Harrison's were shocked. They had no idea it was Loetz. Interesting that you are in Ft. Myers. We were supposed to be on Pine Island but I had a sinus surgery and was in no mood......however that didn't stop me from bidding.
Sorry to hear about your sinus surgery. I hear it is a very painful procedure. We r here for a golf vacation so I wasn't planning on buying any glass as golf seems to be as expensive as glass collecting! However, I did manage to place phone bids on two items at auction just before hitting my chip shot out of the bushes. I didn't get the pieces but I did make par. LOL
Frank, I found a much better match to this vase in the Series II book. 1905 II-2482. It's a perfect match for the shape, though it doesn't list Spiraloptic as a decor. That is not unheard of, I often find matching shapes without the looked-for decor listed.
dlfd911 : Thanks for the research.
New photo added of this vase with some Mimosa friends at the Passau Museum.
Photo thanks to Deb.
Yikes, it looks like they put them on the shelf with a shovel!
Bet they get a few chips now and then.......I would never stack.
Is that really how the Passau Museum maintains their collection?!!! Thank heavens for collectors outside the PM, then...given their conservation methods, we're likely to have better examples. Sheesh.
Jeff, The PGM is a fantastic museum and in my book Herr Holtl is a hero who has dedicated his life and his resources as a conservator of Bohemian glass. As I mentioned to Frank this photo was taken when Herr Holtl gave us a personal tour of the museum and let us in several “secret rooms” not available to the public. I believe this room was a staging room for pieces acquired but not inventoried yet.
