MG William Shafter is best known as the Army Commander of troops during the Spanish American War.
He was a career Army officer rising to the Bevet rank of BG during the Civil War. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroics at the Battle of Fair Oaks. He fought in many campaigns in the Indian Wars.
This image shows Shafter at the time of the Spanish American War (1898).

One of the things I find interesting about the portrait is the facial expression ... borderline pensive yet there seems to pain or regret. Shafter probably saw a lot ugliness in the war and he's definitely expressing himself. And you have ~20 copies of the portrait ... amazing.
It is an interesting expression.
He had 40 years of service in numerous conflicts-- sadly, most today have never heard of him.
