Very little info online, but attached tag lends a lot of clues to its origination. Likely 1940's or 50's. My grandmother had this out every Christmas and it is held with great nostalgia in my family, especially since her passing just before Christmas this season. The pompom and beard are most handled and the fabric in general is well-loved, but no obvious stains or tears. As I've done my own research, I've found a plush monkey, and several zippered santa pajama bags by Bijou, but no santa like this. Our santa has resided in southern Minnesota all these years and I am so curious how it came to be. Was this a common plush sold in every dime store, or perhaps a special gift from a distant friend?

Thank you kindly for shedding some light on its origin and value.

They were made by Bijou Toys in New York around 1950 or so. They also made the Black and yellow monkey doll with plastic face, hands & shoes. A diary cow. Not in business long. Dave

elledalberg, I posted a similar Santa on here a while back. Different body, but definitely the same face. Mine was probably purchased sometime between about 1961 - 1965. Dizzydave, my brother had one of the black and yellow monkeys, I had no idea that they were from the same manufacturer.

My father was the President of Bijou Toys for more than 30 years. Your toy was made in the 1950's while the company was at 16 W. 19th St. That building is now residential and is known as the "Jade" building (Jade Jagger did the interior). The vinyl parts were made by Geneve plastics.

I had a Santa similar to that in the early 1960's. It had a wind up key in the back & played "Mary had a little lamb".

I have a Santa that looks similar to this one but has The Rushton Co. on the bottom of his boot. Mine has been in my family for as long as I can remember. My father was the manager of a Coca C0la plant here in N.C. and my santa is holding a small coke in his hand.

I just bought what I believe to be a snowman. The tag is from Bijou address in NY, NY with toy number 33865. I can only find the santa doll with that number. Any thoughts who my stuffed doll could be with the same number? thanks

I have a similar Santa by Bijou toys that has been in my family my entire life. No one can tell me how old it is. Recently upon the passing of my Gramma, because I have always loved the little guy so much, my Aunt dug him out of the Christmas decorations and gave him to me. But ours isn't as chubby, his eyes are a little different, legs longer, feet white, and doesn't have a scarf. Ours also has the toy number GP33865. I will be posting a few pictures of ours on my page. If anyone has any more information about the Santa dolls I would appreciate it since my family has no knowledge of his history and by the time I started asking questions about him my Gramma's dementia was too pronounced for her to remember and my Grampa had already been gone for 7 years. Thank you for any and all help.
