Shimazu clan of Shimazu (Shimazu-shi) is the name of a powerful Japanese family, who for centuries were the daimyo of Satsuma han. For this reason, the family is sometimes also called the Satsuma clan.
Satsuma porcelain is the name of a type of Japanese pottery products. This pottery was made from a type of clay that was found and processed in the Japanese province of Satsuma, in the 18th and 19th centuries.

For your consideration this is a wonderful antique Japanese Satsuma handpainted enamel brooch or pin. It is finely detailed painted porcelain depicts two men and a woman. The piece dates circa 1880 - 1900 or even earlier? The piece is 1.6" in diameter and in excellent condition. I am almost sure that the metal is silver and is only marked with the Shimazu clan mark.
    It is in excellent condition.
Is my dating correct? Maybe someone knows what the image means?

jwendell222, Thanks for loving and your detailed and interesting communication. Glad I at least know something of this brooch for myself. I know about Asian jewelry and pottery almost nothing. I naturally hope that I still get to hear something of the lady on this brooch, thanks again Jim

jwendell222/ Jim, 3 months ago you gave me some insight into the meaning of this brooch. I would like to knowa little bit more about here. Do you have any idea who this could help me? Or maybe you already know more about the lady on this brooch?

      Hello Jim,
To begin with, when I send my message it was (our time, The Netherlands) 09.30 in the morning so not so early anymore in contradiction to you I think. There are hours difference (in the US later from about 8 to 10 hours later) than in Europe where I live.
But I would like to start my message with the following. I appreciate very much that you are doing so much trouble with such a comprehensive answer to my questions. And of course I fully agree that you post my brooch on Asian forum and of course I hope to find out with you what is so special on the depiction with short hair. I read your posting under the link with interest so I learned something more. That's also why I like CW so much not only to post but also to learn from others as in this case from you. Please keep me informed if you hear something in this matter! And again much appreciated !!!!!
