Ceramic double gourd shape covered in a brown, blue and gray crystalline drip glaze produced by Fritz Krug Porzellan und Terrakottenfabrik (Lauf, Ger.), circa 1900-1910. Light impressed mark underneath. Dimensions: 5.5”(H) x 4”(W).

German ceramic works from the turn-of-the-century are still relatively under-researched. Drip glazes were quite popular and promulgated primarily by Richard & Hermann Mutz. I'm not at all familiar with the early work of the Fritz Krug, but based upon this piece I would say that they were producing ceramics on-par with those of their German and Austrian contemporaries. This piece caught my eye for the glaze characteristics, in which the illusion of effervescence and rising bubbles is prominent.

An amazing fireworks display, cogito! Great glaze!

Thanks to you both. Funny, now that you mention it Vetraio50...it does have a rising fireworks appearance. If you know anything about Fritz Krug, please share it. My searches haven't been too fruitful in finding background info on the company or its designers.

i love the glaze work. it reminds me more of particles settling and reactive color change - like when you mix an absinthe on ice. mmmm!

Thank you for posting this. I am the proud owner of no less than three Fritz Krug vases, all with drip glaze, one also with pewter decoration around the foot, but have the same problem as you - it is practically impossible to find any information on the factory! It seems that it was founded in 1850 and closed in 1968, but from 1950 it seems to have produced bathroom fittings only (porcelain sinks etc.). That's all I've been able to find out!

Thanks Jensen. I would love to see your Krug examples for comparison. I appreciate the additional information on the firm.

This is soooo beautiful! Look at that glaze! :P

      Happy new year, cogito!

(By the way, I've got a lot of pics of Art Nouveau stuff... I'll be sharing them in the next weeks. I hope you like them!)

Hi again - I have now posted some pictures of my three Krug vases - not as pretty as yours, but enjoy anyway!

I found a Fritz Krug vase with the same shape as yours (different glaze)! I've just posted it.

Awesome, Jensen! Just posted a response with your piece. I really like the colors on yours and the metal rim base is very unusual.
