I have seen many of these items with a pressed glass top, and I never liked them. This one, however, seems to be different. The base is unmarked except for a few numbers and the the top appears to be hand-cut.
My best guess is that it comes from the 50's. Any ideas?
Thanks for looking:)
hi freiheit, very nice piece. The glass top from Bohemia. The base looks earlier, would say the 20´s. The quality of cut is extreme fine.
That's far from the style of the 1950's. Modernism was the style of that period, sleek lines, little ornamentation, non-naturalistic themes, machine-like. During the 1950's, this kind of thing was very much out of style and lots of it was thrown away for Formica and chrome.
If this isn't a reproduction, its from at least the turn of the century.
Lilliflunew and Stillwater: Thanks to both of you for you interesting comments. When I say this piece, I just had to have it but I had no idea what it really was :)
Also may thanks to PhilDavidAlexanderMorris, czechman, and mustangtony:)
You don't think they would have been made together Lilli? The glass doesn't really look like a kind of bowl that would have been able to sit on a table, and did they just make bases like that and sell them with nothing on top? I don't know much about this stuff though
Something similar ??

I had a reproduction piece something like this too -- but Mine was from the 1980's. I think where the Glass and Brass join ( the thickness of the brass right there ) might ?? help to date piece as mine look like a thinner brass right at the glass/brass join.
Yours is thick there .......??
Hi, antiquerose. I have two ones like the one I posted here. Both have the same thick brass base like my larger one that was made in Germany but the glass/crystal is of exceptional quality. It reminds me of Czech crystal. My larger one with the sticker on it must be from the late 40's or possibly early 50's because it just says "Germany" on the sticker. If it was made later, it would say East or West Germany. (http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/161145-large-compote-centre-piece-crystal-m)
I have seen bowls like this made of thin brass and pressed glass. Mine are different:)
