It seems that there are certain themes that present themselves when I’m out picking…lately it’s been original artwork that I personally am awed by.
This impressionism painting was less than $10 and found at a quiet thrift shop in the back. I looked at it for about 2 seconds and then had to catch my breath. It was mine. It was in my car for about an hour while running errands and I felt very protective over it, like I had found a masterpiece , couldn’t wait to get home to start researching.
Ironically, I’m not able to find much on H Nelson…Have found Nelson H. White, and although his paintings are impressionism, this painting appears to be a different style than what he paints.
This is one of the thickest painting I’ve come across. Oil on canvas. Measures 20 x 16.
The research continues…

Rhonda, I also have a painting with signature H Nelson that is identical to your painting. It is also a seascape and very similar to the one I found in an antique store. I have also been searching to find out who this artist is. Please let me know if you should find out any information. I have been thinking about going to an appraiser to see if any information can be found on this artist. Like you, this painting "grabbed" me.
Nice find!!
Rhonda, today I had the exact experience you had. The painting I have is almost exactly the same except the boats are reversed! Have you been able to gather any more information?
Hi, my name is Les and I too have a small Watercolour by H Nelson. I have had this for many years wondering who the man who painted this was. Has anyone found any information about him?.
I have looked online, called colleges, newspapers, and libraries and cannot find anything. I love my painting and it needs cleaning badly. If anyone has any other ideas to find this painter please let me know. We would all appreciate it.
Les, I would love to see a copy of your watercolor. Is it a seascape? Thanks!
Hi, yes it is a seascape with a Ship in the distance, size of the painting is 6" x 2 1/2". The print on the back of the frame has the words, " Water Color by Nelson. I am almost sure that it use to be dated 1904, unfortunately that part has fallen off and gone missing. I have posted two photos of the painting on this Website but not sure how you can access them. My Username is LexusLes.
Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/361905410652, I found this on eBay it is unsigned of course. Maybe just maybe this could be your artist.
H. Nelson sold his paintings at the Starving Artist Galleries, they were mostly held at hotels back in the 80s. I too have one of his from my mother who informed me of this.
I have a beautiful painting of seascape and boats of H Nelson. Anyone that could give me an indication of age and value! Regards Marlene(Lientjie)
