Another great find from our local "Goodwill". I saw this and thought maybe I should buy it but didn't at first (not a big abstract fan). Then I went home and thought about it and looked online and saw a couple of his works on Ebay. One was a "buy it" now for $2,200 ( I think this guy is overly optimistic)!! Another was $ 849.00 !! A few other auction sights were showing anywhere from $200.00 up to $ 4,500 ! You better believe I jumped back in the car and hoped it was still there ! It was. I really like it now...lol ! I checked the back it had a custom frame makers tag but sadly part of it was missing. Probably the title. It ended with Lawson oil.... it was brittle an torn on the last line. What it does say is it was custom framed (gold anodized aluminum) for " Leopold Bros." and it's numbered #4413 on the stretcher and tag. I believe it came from a furniture store here in Brecksville Ohio, they've been in business since 1859, although it's just Leopold's now.Probably was in their showroom in the 60's or 70's. I actually sent them an e-mail to see if my hunch is correct. We shall see. It measures 40" x 40 " in it's gold frame, but it's not the largest of his paintings that I've seen online. It's been bumped around a bit with dimples, light scratches and one tiny (1/4") puncture at the bottom. Darn Goodwill most likely because it looks recent. It still shows well and if it's worth the money I'll have it cleaned and repaired. Not too much about the artist except he was born in 1920 in New Orleans. Studied in New York and Paris around 1948. Don't even know if he's still alive. If so he'd be 93 ! -Mike-
I've done that...super panicked ride back to the thrift...hoping its still there. Big painting and I like the colors.
I had an auction house in Cleveland take a look at the painting's pictures a few weeks ago. They finally wrote back and said there was no reason to believe it wasn't authentic. They don't give an appraised value unless you plan to sell it through their auction house. Maybe I will, someday when the market isn't so soft. My opinion is $200 to $500 on a good day but you never know. The last one on Ebay was $849 or best offer. The gentleman took the offer and I asked him if he would mind telling me. He said he took the $500 offer an ended the auction.So it is worth a lot more than I paid for it ! -Mike-
fantasic find...I have found several oils at local thrift shop in my area but the best place for me to go is the small church trift store mostly because they are run by volunteer elderly woman who really don't know what they have. One experience I had was that I saw an oil that I thought looked like the Alamo, when I did do research it I found it to be done by a famous aritist from San Antonio in the early 50's. Lets put it this way I bought it for 1.49 and sold it for over $400...so never pass up those out of the way little thrift stores cause thats normally where the hidden treasures are

Wow you're really going back a ways on my posts ! No, this is one of my prize finds. I'm really not a modern art person but I love the colors and I got caught up in mid-century modern decor. It's not his usual color scheme which is mostly in the yellow, green, brown very 70's pallette. I appreciate it much more now. Then there's the fact that it's worth a fair amount. I've had numerous offers though, but it's a keeper!

Oh...I know the feeling I love everything that shows up on CW but I'd never get away from the computer if I "loved" each individual post. I follow everyone that loves or comments on my posts and try to thank them. It's a loooong list...lol.
hmmm .....come to think of it they should have a" Love Bomb"button so you could include all of one CW members posts after a review !
Mikelv85... I was wondering if you ever found out the value of your Lawson painting. My husband came home with one from a thrift store last week. He bought it for me because I love abstract and it fits quite well with our decor. I started researching Lawson and came across your thread! My painting is in the same frame with a similar ( very brittle) paper tag on the back. The painting is in perfect condition!! Just wondering if you could provide any info on our find. Thanks!!

I realize this is an old post but I am just seeing it! I too found an original Robert Lawson at a thrift store. $9.99 at Goodwill. Mine is long and in varying shades of green in a brass frame. Mint condition. Can't bear to part with it. Did you ever sell yours?
