This is a WWI Sappers trench saw, made 1917 by Francis Wood and Sons, Sheffield.
This rather evil looking piece of kit is for cutting down trees and making props for the sides of dugouts etc.. It is like a bicycle chain with teeth that can be rolled up and stored in a leather pouch that has loops so it can be worn on the belt.
I bought this quite a few years ago because it feels so historic and of its period and also because it is such a cool boys toy. You can take it out to show your friends and they all think it's cool, and this it because it is.
GREAT WW1 item-- I love the wood handles and brass.
I remember a buddy who had a modern one of these when I was stationed at FT Bragg in the 90s-- it was very useful to modern soldiers!
