Hi Guys,
I found this beautiful figure over Easter weekend. She was definitely made in art nouveau style with her flowing hair and green dress and (what I think is) calla lily bouquet. I found some works by an Austrian artist that seem to be in similar style. She is roughly 1 foot tall and hollow inside. At first I thought she was ceramic but now I think she is painted ceramic on top of metal. She rings when I tap her. Some kind of copper alloy? The hollow structure opening at the bottom makes me wonder if she is a Christmas tree topper. But when is she from? Where was she made? I can't find anything else like this online.
Okay, I think maybe it is made of spelter, not ceramic at all. Curious why is the paint so dull and matte?
She is beautiful! I'm guessing there are no makers marks anywhere?
It reminds me of the figurehead (if that's what they're called) on the bow of a sailing ship. Maybe it was the inspiration for this lovely piece.
This strikes me as being hispanic in nature and design. While the style is reminiscent of Art Nouveau, I believe that she is really more recent (modern) and either hispanic or American Indian in origin. Beautiful, though!
I'd say it's Mexican...
@Mary No, there are no maker's marks unfortunately.
@Austro @cogito Yeah, that would make sense since I found her in Southern California. It kind of does seem like a modern art person was emulating Austria / France Art Nouveau.
@Thesbian I know! I thought of a ship's bow also - At first I thought she was doing the classic "Titanic", but now I'm thinking she is supposed to be throwing the flowers in a big sweeping motion.
