Stand by to Beach is a WWII book about the Normandy landings written by Gordon Holman published in December 1944. It includes quite a few photographs.
I have quite a few books like this, and what I like about them is the immediacy of it all. If you think of the technology involved then in writing and printing a book, they must have been going hammer and tongs to get this one out for Christmas. In a way it's a terrible read, not particularly coherent, quite jingoistic, etc, etc.. but I still love it. It's what makes it good. The cover screams buy me, I am full of hot action.
What is also good is that books like this don't get the recognition deserve as pieces of history. I bought this about 3 years ago in a antiques centre for £4. So if you want to collect these books in the UK, they are still cheap.
