Found this at goodwill and thought it was cool. It is heavy , and it says "weems and plath Annapolis md USA" on the compass. I have no idea where it came from or if its old, and google is failing me. Any info would be awesome!
Weems & Plath has been around for a really long time. They do a lot of nautical/navigation equipment and are based in Annapolis, MD near the US Naval Academy there. So it seems this would be some kind of compass - or whatever the nautical equivalent would be - but it doesn't look like there is a "pointer" on the compass. Does the middle section "float"? I don't know what the ship compasses are called, but if this thing is heavy, it wouldn't be made to carry around, so maybe it's designed to be mounted for a ship (the floating would keep that section balanced in rough waves.) Can't help with the Williamsburg connection (although I've been a member of the CWF for about 10 years and I have never seen anything like this)
Trusty huckster- thanks! The section does kind of float around, and there is a tiny pointer right under the "o" in "colonial".

I own the exact same Compass. Mine came in a nice box.
