After slowly building a salt glazed stoneware collection from flea markets, a couple of low profile auctions, etc., I visited the Washington Antiques Show and a very accommodating Folk Art specialist who took the time to educate me on several of his pieces. Feeling almost guilty, I bought this piece.

I have paid more for pieces since then, but at the time, it was the most I had paid for a piece of stoneware, and I definitely had some buyer's remorse afterward, because once placed alongside the rest of my collection, it almost blended (in a really nice way) with everything else, and didn't seem special enough to justify the cost. But what I have always appreciated about that piece is the education I got and the information provided.

Per the seller, the piece is from the Northern Shenandoah Valley, Virginia circa 1830 - 1850. It is 9 3/4" tall. Evidently the application of the handles is what provides the origin info (I included a closeup of that), as well as the incised rim. There are a couple of blemishes, some pre-firing and one post fire, but overall really good condition.

NOTE - I do not know what the blue design is called, so if anyone knows that, I would appreciate the info.

Hello.... I love this pot ...I think it might be VA also. VA pottery is my weakness. Do you have any further information on it. Is it possible that you might sell it. If so I'd like to hear from you either way. Thank you for posting...it's sweet. Mark
