Thrifting has been very dull here lately. Two weeks ago I went to see Dad and on the way back home called into Vinnies for the second time that day. Nothing earlier to buy, but now I saw this beaker on the shelf. It was cheap so I thought I would take it even just for study purposes.

    I like cut glass.

Much of it can leave me very cold. But this was more interesting than most. In researching it I have learnt a little more about the terminology of glass cutting. I now know the difference between a 'hobstar' and a 'Brunswick star'. This one has a band of four 16 pointed Brunswick stars.

I have also learnt to look more carefully at the "flashing" on these pieces of glass. Is it really "cased glass" or has the finish been painted on? In this case the amber colour has been painted on, I think. You can see very small irregularities where the paint has gone above the horizontal band that defines the clear cut section. It's a much cheaper way of colouring glass.

It's age is a bit of a mystery too! It looks nineteenth century in form but there are twentieth century elements! It almost looks like a Deco version of a traditional Bohemian beaker.

What I would really like to know is the German term for "Brunswick star" too! It is such a well used motif these days in Bohemia crystal.

    H: 15 cm or 5.9 inches.
W: 8.5 cm or 3.3 inches at widest point.

Any help with this beaker would be appreciated!

I think that is cased. not flashed or stained. it's got a layer of tan that you can see in the rim shot. that looks thicker to me than flashing.

I buy pieces (super cheap) so I can learn as well. As you studied this piece did you find some good reference sites? I'm struggle with glass. There is SO much. I've gone with my gut a few times and lucked out. They "feel" old. Mt stretched blue candle sticks are a perfect example. They currently are my favorite piece.
Usually I stare at something at the thrift, debate, them put down. So many fakes out there!

Hi, the english name BRUNSWICK is the translation for the german feudal state BRAUNSCHWEIG which was ruled by Great Britain´s Kings. But we have no translation in german. We also use the word BRUNSWICK STAR. Regards Ernest

Hi V, belated thanks for the reference. Been crazy here. Got 9" of rain overnight so massive flooding. Power outage. Hubby out of town. Still drying out the basement, we didn't do too bad but all my neighbors had 4 feet of water in their basements! River overflowed. Nutso! Silver lining is that all the neighbors pulled together to get everyone on a path of dry. It was nice to see.

Hope things get better soon, Amber! Times have been rough there from what I've read. News has been dominated by events in the east, I s'pose. But our thoughts are with you all here in Oz! I saw the photos of the sink holes. But these events draw everyone together as you say.
I just hope that things return to normalcy as quickly as possible. Love to you and your family from both of us!

Well thank you. Yes, it's been pretty crazy here. The East coast is dominating the news...rightly so...but lots of guesses being put out as well. But we are all good. Drying out and getting it all taken care of. Thanks for the love, we will always take that!

Isn't it funny how just as you are about to give up hunting for the day you find some little gem. Happens to me all the time. Once the garage and tag sales start for the summer there will be plenty to choose from. The thrift stores will be loaded with post sale donations. Our local Goodwill manager says the month of May is always busy, at least here in Ohio.

      Hello Kevin,
My Mom has a dresser set of clear & amber design that my Grandmother sent in the late 50's.
I don't remember any of the amber scratching through,.....so my guess is that it's cased.
I, too, love cut glass. My Mom has a lot of it, some beautiful things that family sent from Czechoslovakia in the 40's, 50's & 60's.
This was a good find in a dry spell.
Come to Cape Cod!, the thrifts here have suddenly begun to perk up,....finding some interesting things lately.
      cheers to all,
      T

This is great news Tonino that things are beginning to pick up in the US! The effects spread wide. I've seen those new postings of yours. Hope it continues to flow. The shops here are still dry. I resorted to a buy on ebay the other day! I hope it arrives today.
