This is a hand made Tramp Art or Folk Art frame w/coat or hat hooks that I acquired several years ago at a flea market kind of sale. When I first saw it, it was in many pieces and in need of a lot of TLC. The person selling it said that if it didn't sell that day she was going to dismantle it and use the ornate parts to make a doll house....well I wasn't going to let that happen, and I acquired it for $35
It's unbelievably ornate, the pictures really don't do it justice. Someone must have spent hundreds of hours with a scroll saw to create this incredible work of art.
It's rather large for a hand made piece of this type, measuring about 30" wide and over 4 feet in overall height. The columns on either side are open cut on all three sides and note the wooden 'bird's head' hooks at the bottom. Also the open cut 'roundels' and squares around the frame itself and the open cut fan shaped brackets. Everywhere you look it is embellished and ornamented.
It's delicate enough that I would never actually use it for the hanging of hats or coats.
Everyone that sees this piece is amazed at the fantastic workmanship.

Do you think at one time there was a mirror in it?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there was, and that is what I should do with it again.
We had a antique photo in it for awhile, which worked OK, but probably not what it was originally designed to have.

Don't dare call that "tramp art"! I have made furniture & tried my hand at carving. You have a work of art. I know a "labour of love" when I see it. I've spent time studying this & love it. Amazing that so few pieces have been broken off. Your pics don't really indicate the size. Love it & hope you truly appreciate the work involved. By your presentation, I can tell you do. Thanks for sharing.

PS. I think that is before scroll saws if you mean powered.

No, I was thinking probably more the hand held coping type saw. I had an uncle who did some of this kind of work with the small coping saw, but not to this scale or size.
The size is a little deceiving, it is quite large for this kind of piece and has a huge amount of intricate workmanship.
My grandfather, dad, and I were all finish carpenters, so I do realize what went into creating this frame. And, you're right this is a work of art! I wish I knew who created it.
