NEED HELP AND PROFESSIONAL OPINIONS!!! I own a 1910 2.5 dollar indian head U.S. gold coin but on the eagle side there is another type of metalmelted into the coin. It looks almost like copper which has me wondering if this could have possibly happened during the minting process because these coin are in fact 10% copper. Also, this unknown metal is almost completely flush with the coin and the position it is at almost seems to parralel the eagle design under it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!
possibly soldered in the past on a tie clip.
Could be something like that i guess, obviously the coin is very old. But for as long as i have owned which has been 20 years now it was in a ring held in by little gold prongs around the edges only holding the coin place and nowhere near the middle of the coin. And the solder used for the prongs was gold as well, not the mystery metal on the eagle.
Being a coin buff i could imagine that could be an error coin, it would be called a "lamination" which is a flaw whereby a fragment of metal has peeled off the coins surface. This deffect occurs when a foreign substance, such as gas oxides or dirt, becomes trapped in the strip as it is rolled out to the proper thickness. Sometimes lamination flaws may be missing or still attached to the coins surface. So i could be wrong but it may be a lamination.
I just noticed you said it looks like copper, deffinetly sounds like lamination but its hard to tell, id bring it to your local coin dealer or even go as far as getting it graded by pcgs or ngc, top two grading companys.
From the scan I would guess that someone tried to make a button out of it.
Im going to send it in to get graded so i know for sure but thank you guys very much!
No problem, one of my favorite gold pieces are the 2 1/2$ and 1$ gold pieces.
