This Canvas trunk came from my wife's G.G. Aunt she was the wife of the captain of ship they went to Hong Kong this years.
20" by 29" and 14" with this name? what is the wood?

I know very little about this type of trunk -- what leads you to believe it is from the 1870's? The wood is probably camphor.
She traveled with her husband in 1880-1892 around the world every year a Chipper ship from Salem or New York we have her diaries from this yrs. She died 1917 here in our home with all antiques from around the world.
Awesome piece of history to have. The latch on this is often copied on many reproductions -- it is great to have an authentic one to look at -- if you have an opportunity at some time I would love to see a close up of the latch for reference.
Can anyone understand how these closed with the string?
