I have seen so many reproductions but never one this age. It is really fabulous -- particularly nice to see the quality of the brass and the way the cover works to hide the keyhole. The design has an elegant simplicity to it. The newer ones are always overdone. Before I saw this one I was never sure that this design was in use on the older trunks. Thank you so much for taking the time to photograph this for me. I have learned something new that I had been curious about for some time. You have a beautiful family heirloom -- thanks for sharing it with us!
Your welcome i looked closing at the sides for names who used this, it was used in 1903 by my wife's G. Grandfather.
Being a small trunk, with working handles though, I will keep this one. We have 4 different ones from 1880-1906 and are spreading these around in our family. Which happens every 25 or more years i understand now. These were were in our attic, came from my wife's grandmother who moved to Maine in 1970, She died in 1988. And these were brought home and stored in our attic. Actually they were in our attic from 1917 till 1940 then next door house attic till 1970, Maine and now back here.Funny
Btw this one was around the world a few times on that ship i bet 1880s.
