This is an original 1926 "Carter The Great" stone lithograph window card from my private collection of Magic posters. This window card was printed by The Otis Lithograph Co. and measures approximately 14" x 22" and is in "A" condition! A remarkable example of stone lithography that shows Carter holding a crystal ball surrounded by demons, bats, and other various creatures of the underworld.
Charles Joseph Carter (1874–1936), who began his career as a journalist and lawyer, was an American stage magician who performed as "Carter the Great." Carter's first theatrical experience occurred at the Herzog's museum and Pat Harris' Masonic Temple in Baltimore at the age of 10, where he appeared as "Master Charles Carter the Original Boy Magician".
On April 9, 1918, Carter opened on Broadway to mixed reviews. Billboard said he was clever and witty, however, Variety found the acting in one of his skits "almost as atrocious as the lion seems ferocious." Carter's "indefinite" run only lasted a mere two weeks.
Following Charles Carter's death from a heart attack in 1936, his son Larry Carter took over as Carter the Great.
Thanks BELLIN68, yeah this one is another winner! More to come.
These put my old Halloween postcards to shame! Beautiful images!
Thank you SpunkysMom, much appreciated. Photos do NOT due these posters justice, they are just stunning when you see them in person!
