What does it say other than New York? I can't make out the other writing. Google the marks on it, that will probably lead you in the right direction.

HELLO-I DID THAT 1ST TIME I SAW IT! I GOT nothing-i tryed goggle/yahoo/msn etc"! nothing about a pen- you find a company that made the tip-not the pen-thats why i really want to find out what it is-i saw 1 other 1 like it-and thay said about the other 1-that people would store stuff in the empty space inside the pen-like a doctor would put a thing that takes your temp" etc"! etc"strange stuff like that! the tip says;J.ULL RICH &CO NEW YORK--THANKS

Well, it was made by J. Ullrich & Co. that was in NY, established 1884. Thats about all I can find.

I really want to find out if its a old 1 + if it was a good pen for its day! stuff like that--I looked all over plus sent a pic of it to 2 differant people that know pens! I got nothing from them! i find that odd!I also got a old small bottle of red ink for the pen!its a cool shape! i thank you for looking around""-enjoy the rest of the weekend! cod

It's clearly a portable dip pen. It's unlikely to be a thermometer case, as they usually were either exclusively for thermometers or had a separate compartment for the glass thermometer, to prevent the glass from contacting and damaging the softer gold nib. Dip pens of this type became more rare in the early teens especially post Great War as the fountain pens took over the market. It appears to be a natural wood. As such it's likely as old as late 19c. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the original nib as the pen itself looks to be very lightly used.

HELLO-I THANK YOU VERY MUCH-for the info about the pen! I agree about the thermometer bit//I was just useing it as a-could it be/kinda thing! I saw a pen a little like this 1-and it said that thay would store things in it! not this 1-but there were 1's that did do that! What do i do with this pen-If i wanted to sell it?whare do i take it-or who do i talk to about it? do you have any idea on who gets stuff like this?-I have no idea what to do with it! Im not into collecting pens at all! I got a bunch of old stuff cleaning out my wifes grandpa's house!from old tools to stuff like this! If you know anybody that likes this stuff-I would really app"-it if you let me know--it really needs to be with some one that will like it! not sit in a envolope in a box! I thank you for telling me about the pen-I looked around alot on the web--and you can look for hours and no find what your looking for!! close-but not the same 1!! like the 1st people that responed to this pen/look on the web!!:):)--you think!! I looked alot and got the same thay did!! you gave me more--then the web did! thank you --cody

It is a lovely looking pen, but without some provenance, it's impossible to guess at value. The only suggestion I have is to put it on ebay. Pen Collectors of America has a site for listing items but I think you have to be a member. I've been following items on ebay for a couple of years and have noticed many seem to fetch a better price when the starting price is lowest. It can get more people interested, and that often leads to some strange bidding. Especially lately with fountain pens, I've seen some rediculously inflated prices when you get the right few people bidding.
I have a couple of very nice dip pens (sterling chased and filligree, as well as one similar to yours in that it disassembles as a travelling pen, but it's aluminum), and I make it my hobby to collect, restore, and use pens. There are many of us out there that use ebay to add to our collections.
      Best Regards, Mark
