this is a 1901 lothrop patent fog horn, not real sure what the 1 at the bottom stands for but it is pully functional and is a really cool find. lookin for a little bit of history behind this horn.

I check the patents on fog horns and indeed Liewellyn Lothrop of Glouchester, Mass patented a fog horn on Aug 20, 1901 #680,874. Mr Lothrop holds several patents some being a Yo-yo Oct 1906, range kettle Feb 1872, fishing tackle Jan 1886. stove cover lifter july 1872.
I have one of these, it does say Gloucester on it. No paint job, just bare aged wood, but it works! makes quite a racket. now if I only had a boat...

I just found a #1 in a surplus place. I am amazed, it is in like new condition. Does anyone know when these were made?
i have one of these but instead of having one horn in has two inside the box is that worth any money?
I have a Lothorp foghorn that was given to me as a kid. It has the original lettering on it. Though it doesn't appear to ever have had paint on it. It still works though it sounds like a sick cow. Never knew if it was worth anything. But it's cool.
Hi, i have a similar fog horn that I would love to know more about. My Dad actually picked it up in Hong Kong in the 70's but it was made in NYC according to the markings on it. This one is red and very similar to the model pictured above, but is marked on one side "Dalco Fog Horn" with "No. 1" below. On the other side it is marked in small letters, "Ballou Instrument and Service Co., NY" or something close to that. The only mention I can find out about Ballou (they may have been ship's chandlers) is a mention of s ship's bell marked with their name. Can anyone supply any more info on the old thing, such as approximate date of manufacture? Thank you!
