Published 1970 & very comprehensive. There is one pic. that I have known all my life & has a mistake in the text. Under the pic. of the mounted battery in the stream, it says they are cooling the hooves of the horses. In fact, they are soaking the wheels so the wood will swell & tighten them.
Hi, Blunderbuss! Hope you're feeling great and that your life is filled with many interesting things! Would this book be a good choice in a gift for my former Green Beret brother - who loves to study firearms and weaponry, and the Civil War? Thanks, and take care, sir!!! : )
I would recommend it highly. Lots of info on diff. kinds of rifling, construction, mills etc.. I really appreciated the way some of the fuses were designed to only activate after leaving the tube by the propelling charge or the spin from the rifling. Such things as "shunt rifling" etc. gets the brain cells going too. They weren't stupid back then & were quick to learn from mistakes. Answer is a definite yes as you can spend many hrs. understanding the reasoning behind the designs. This was a time of war, desperation & many if the designs were later used with improvements or discarded. Evolution.
Thank you very much, sir, for your most kind response! I have saved this entry and now know that I cand produce a gift that will please a brother who's not fond of material goods, and is a bit hard to buy for. I think he'd love this book! Take care!
