The Story of the Nails
These particular nails were discovered in Inchtuthil, Scotland and forged of iron. For a brief time the area was held and an encampment was garrisoned at Inchtuthil. The nails were stocked there presumably to be used in construction, but they were never touched by carpenters' hammers. In 87 A.D. the encampment at Inchtuthil was abandoned as part of a strategic retreat caused by the reduction of the Roman forces in Britian by one full legion (about 5,000 men). When the fortress was dismantled and excavated the nails were buried and site carefully concealed. To a wealthy Rome the nails were merely an expandable supply of nails; but to the enemy they would have been invaluable to reforge into weapons.
Professor I. A. Richmond
He was responsible for the excavation of the nails. Him and his associates made the archaeological find in 1960.
