Looking at making a little nicer and cleaner to put in home for toy chest, prob not going to worry much about hardware. It will be a toy chest, and going to put brackets on so top doesn't slam shut. This is obviously before any restoration. Trying to find out history, and if I am correct with type of Trunk/Chest.

Thank you, I have to admit I was a little depressed at first. My husband is on the road, and I don't have any friends to help me. But I found a man who restores antiques. I am going to have to pay, but I am confident it is worth it, and needs to be done. I also think there are some baby spiders, lol, and I fear spiders. Otherwise I do think it is pretty cool.

I was told recently by an antique restoration/antique trunk expert it is "a nice dometop from 1890" ;) and appears to have saddler's nails which is unique

It is a very lovely trunk well worth the restoration. You must show us a picture when it is completed!!

Iwould love to hear the plan for the lithograph and the paper in the lid. It is a beauty and wll only get better. Have fun.

Well the man doing the "restoring" said we are going to leave the top/lid alone, but I think he mentioned the bottom putting felt/maybe some cedar/make it smell better. I wish I had another spot to put it other than outside. It rains here, I placed a blanket over it. It think its a little too crusty right now to be in the house. I wish I had all the enthusiasm others have. This is my first trunk and looking at it ,I think wow how do people restoring these things. I am just crossing my fingers ;)

I am all for leaving it alone from the standpoint of preserving it as much as possible , Still there must be some cleaning and perhaps some sealing that might be necessary for the preserving. Just curious.

two other thoughts. If you take a fine steel wooln to the buttons on the metal binding you may find them to be brass, but maybe not. the hasp that is mounted next to the lock is what people did to secure the trunk after they had lost the key so I do not think it is original.

Yeah the man said about steel wool all over for rust too, not going to worry much about hardware, because it will be toy chest....as far as what one does to "clean" and such not sure, but I just mentioned that with wanting in my house it needs cleaned up and such, and he mentioned about these brackets (can't think of proper name) to place on top so lid doesn't slam, you can open it,prob have it slightly open and such , so boys can get it and out without hurting themselves
