I was cleaning out attic and in a box of old Xmas lights this Cdv was on the bottom of the box. This famous man was named from this uncle who died in Lexington 1776. and his son and would be my wife's G.G.Grandfather. Here is the only CDV we have of him in album, this a great find. But it is has dirt on it, can i put it in water ?
Do not put attempt to clean or put in water. The so-called dirt could be dirt or impurities in the image. The image and mount are very fragile and imperfections are common. Many of my images have surface defects but I leave them alone.
I want to echo rob's comments, don't put this in water. Brown discoloration is common and expected on these albumen images.
I do know collectors/ dealers who use archival erasures on some marks. I collect and deal in images and find nothing objectionable in your image.

Thanks Scott and rniederman its not the brown but some marks which look like dirt, i will leave it alone. My problem now is finishing cleaning the attic we are selling this old house from 1803, maybe others pictures to find?
Just googled his name with war of 1812, Maine Newpapers have a story about him and the nasty fights about Mines history nice read for historians.

There are a lot of archival products out there for paper cleaning (smell, bugs, foxing, etc...) and preservation. While your image does have some scratching, I don't see anything that is in need of or would benefit from conservation.
I would recommend that you get some archival sleeves to store your images in. Sleeves will prevent further scratching and protect the image. They are available in various sizes that are made for specific antique photographs (cabinet cards, CDV, stereoview).

I'm sorry this has nothing to do with cleaning the photo. I would like to know if this is Perley Putnam from Lowville NY, born 1808 died 1867. He was also named for his uncle. If this is him he is mt 4th Great Grandfather.
No His and his family was from Salem Ma.
Wow!!! I am in shock and awe right now that I have come across this post. This is a picture a my 5xGreat Grandfather. Just to clarify Colonel Perley Putnam was named after his Uncle Perley who was shot and killed at the Battle of Menotomy on April 19,1775. His father was shot and wounded during the same battle. Currently doing research and visited the Jason Russell farm last summer. Would love to chat more about it.
