I was hoping the get the attention of some stamp collectors. To make a long story short, I bought a huge lot of stamps today. Some were in wax envelopes and others just loose in a box. It looks liks I came across someone's old collection of stamps at the Goodwill store for dirt, dirt cheap. Of course, I know nothing about stamps.

I was hoping someone could tell me if this is, in fact, a stamp from 1840. I wonder what the initials J I stand for. What kind of condition is this in? Does anyone know a good solid stamp resource for world stamps?? Thanks for looking!!!

Yes it looks real. The letters are use to show the location on the plate that the stamp came from. See this site for info: http://philatelics.org/~allan/shrop/blacks/page1.html

      Thanks for sharing,

      A Penny Black!
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penny_Black
It depicts the young Queen Victoria printed in sheets of 240 from 11 different plates by Perkins, Bacon & Petch. It is also the first of the avidly collected LINE ENGRAVED issues of Great Britain, and the issue is also actively collected by sheet position which is indicated in the lower corners of the stamp from position A-A to position position T-L.
      In your case J-I.

oh wow.....thank you so much tubeamp and vetraio50 for the info. I am very overwhelmed, I somehow came across thousands and thousands of stamps, many pre 1900 Canada and Germany..... Is the Scott stamp Catalog the best reference? What have I gotten myself into....I guess it is a good thing... Okay I will read your links now. Thanks!!!!

I think the Scott book will do a great job to help you. Happy hunting!
