Panama Pacific International Exposition was held from Feb. 20-Dec. 4, 1915 in San Francisco to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal. It was a spectacular World’s Fair in spite of the fact that the First World War was already raging in Europe. As with any world’s fair they had their own voluntary police force drawn from the surrounding police departments. For their services the guards all received an attractive antique finished bronze service medal on a satin red, white and blue ribbon. How many guards could they have had? My estimate would be a maximum of 50 which would make this a fairly scarce medal. One of these just sold in a Holabird Sale last August for over $100 including the buyers fee and postage.
