I find collecting hatpins a very interesting choice. I don't know if I had ever seen any around here. I guess now I will be in tune!

I purchased what was described as an antique brass and green stone hatpin and the brass metal work appeared much brighter online but is much darker in person. The hatpin appears to have an antique black patina coating over the brass frame metal work surrounding the green stone that does not come off with casual rubbing on my finger tips. Was this treatment done to antique hatpins when they were originally made, or was it something that happened to the finish over time (the back is still bright brass), or is this something someone did to it more recently? I need to know quickly as I only have a few days to return it to the seller if so. Thanks for any help on this!
