This is turning out to be a day of "oddities". I ran up to the Oberlin Goodwill and came back with 4 pieces of art work. This is one of them. Beautiful antique needlework that's 107 years old ! Professionally framed with non-glare glass and signed with the makers name and the date, on the back by the family who owned it. The background fabric photographed really white for some reason. It's actually turned a yellow/ beige color over the years but the colors of the needlework and center painting are still bright. The center panel is hand painted (watercolor, pen and ink) with needlework accents. It even says copyright 1906 in the corner. Smart Great-Grand ma...lol. It measures 20" x 20" in a very nice wood frame with a green accent in the center. Nice piece of history and textile art. -Mike-
I had someone tell me on the Ebay needlework forums that this is not a sampler but might be a pillow sham. Maybe even a store bought embroidery stencil. The problem with Ebay is everyone thinks you want to sell your pieces . I think they misinform you just to make you think it's worthless and get it for less than it's worth. I still believe it's all hand made and painted myself. I could open it up and look but I don't think that would be a good idea on something so old.
Hi,
I have this exact same sampler that - as the story goes- my great grandfather stitched around 1898 when he was 16 years old.
We thought he painted the center scene because he was an artist, but it does seem like this was a store bought stencil.
It is not a pillowcase, it’s a muslin or linen piece.
Yours is much nicer . A better job of stitching . Mine is a little more crudely done but it’s still a family treasure to me.
I love the red poppies….they are symbols for remembrance. It’s beautifully stitched and painted.
