Found this watch in a obscure shop in an Asian city. The seller insisted it was an antique from the collection of a very old gentleman who had passed away. Ended up parting with a whole bunch of dollars in exchange for it. Have not been able to figure out whether this is a genuine Cartier or something weird the shopkeeper put together. Am not a watch collector but would definitely want to know if I got ripped off or did I actually pick up something worth keeping.

Digital or Jump watches have been around since the 1950's. they became very popular in the early 1970's and could be found with many makers names.

having an automatic movement plus the name Cartier is quite nice. But, given it comes from a area known for "replicas and fakes" I can understand the concern if it is genuine or not?

Just seeing that it has a clear caseback is a making me lean towards a nice copy. As such a feature is a more modern element and not one found on what looks to be a 1950's watch.

Also, I would think that a Cariter maovment would be much more elegant and not so genric looking

      Will do some more research.

Ran a serach and found a genuine Cartier Jump Watch. One feature that is different is the crown on the genuine is hex shaped and does not have the jeweled cap. so I now lean more towards copy......but can only tell so much from a pic.

Yes, unlikely to be a Cartier. I can see that the case is only gold (?) plated. The style is known as a "Jump Watch". This one looks like it is modeled on the "Lord Elgin" by Elgin (US manufacturer) but not circa 1950, a more recent version. The real give away is that Cartier (as jewellers) aren't watchmakers as such. Cartier are better known for making the case with a swiss movement( which is usually top quality
Swiss movement). Cartier work primarily in gold and platinum, this is just some type of base metal with a gold color wash over it (real gold plating would be marked as such). So, sorry to say, it's probably worth $50 to resell, but if you bought it because you liked it, it doesn't matter (I hope).
