This photo tells a story of hardship & sorrow, a compelling image.
Thanks david-- I concur with your assessment of the subject and the image!

I did a little research on Sioux communities in Minnesota & the closest is the Prairie Island Indian Community. They have an interesting story as they were a group that left the Santee Indian Reservation in Nebraska to return to their ancestral lands possibly around 1886. It was a small community with only 60 individuals listed in the 1890 census.
This man certainly couldn't afford to have his own photo taken, it would be so interesting to know who he was.

Thanks david-- certainly something to look into.
I believe that this guy may have been a significant individual in the tribe/ history and hope that someone recognizes the face.

I wonder if the Minnesota Historical Society has anything in their collection?

Or the Wabasha County Historical Society.

your "man" may very well be a women -- looking at the neck there is not the prominent showing of the hyoid bone (adams apple) as seen in the male sex -- interesting information given on this site

I... presumed it was! a woman when I saw it…it actually makes me feel quite sad looking at it, but that’s good I suppose.. an emotional reaction!....:-/

I think it is a Lady -- with lots of mixed emotions, and can understand that, especially from that time period.
Thanks musik-- I appreciate you looking and commenting.

I believe it is a woman also :-)

This picture is so touching. It made me what to hug her. She looks like she's lost her family or something. Such sadness in her eyes.
Thanks tom.

Agree with walksoftlys comment here. A very moving & sad photo:( I wonder what her life as a child was like, she may never have seen a white man. The treatment of native Americans is a sad chapter in US history. Not only the US but the UK has been just as bad in its history of dealing with natives. Disgraceful, some of the things I've read & seen make me cry
Sorry Scot, but i just read you say its a guy, do you know or is that a guess? i thought it looked more like a woman.
'It' i meant he/she
Thanks fran-- I was not able to confirm male/ female. Either way a compelling image.
Thanks for posting and showing interest.
