The box was found at Vinnies a few months ago on a Monday morning. I was surprised that it was still there. But Italian pottery is not to everyone's taste. The mark on this piece is one that I now associate with the Fanciullacci Brothers.
But there are other markers too!
The foot on the bottom of the bowl is nicely worked. The lid fits nicely on the constructed rim too. The quality of the potting of Fanciullacci pieces is wonderful to my eye.
The decoration is a combination of techniques. The tooling on the edges is so similar to the Bitossi pieces of Aldo Londi. The sgrafitto decoration of the Etruscan horses is amazing! Perfectly placed! Each horse has a different glaze. I've now seen two other pieces with this decor and they are attributed to the Brothers Fanciullacci.
The white glaze on the terra cotta lid looks like lemon icing on a cake. Brittle!
I would not be surprised if this is another piece by Aldo Londi when he worked with "the Brothers" in the 30's.
Many thanks everyone: Phil, nldionne, Zowie, mustangT, czechman, moonsoneL., maryh1956 and to you too bratjdd'
Italian pottery is definitely to my taste!
This is a really unique piece too, very different from traditional Italian pottery, has a very Southwestern USA / native American feeling, which is where I come from so I really appreciate it
Great find
