A friend recently gave this to me. No history. No information. I am hoping that someone here can enlighten me. Is it an Angel? Why is there fire above his head? Thanks.

What is written on that book in his left hand will be one clue. Could you add it to your description? The flame over the head might be a "tongue of fire"?

A Dominican martyr? The robe looks like a Dominican habit and the tongue of fire suggests martyrdom. Martyros = witness.

      Thanks for the new picture!

Timete Deum! quia venit hora iudicii eius…

      That will be:
      SAINT VINCENT FERRER
      (1350-1419)
Vincent Ferrer, O.P., was a Valencian Dominican friar, who gained acclaim as a missionary and a logician. He is honored as a saint of the Catholic Church.

He was a famous preacher. The tongue of fire was not that of a martyr, I was wrong. Instead it is a suggestion that he had the 'gift of tongues' .

"For twenty-one years he was said to have traveled to England, Scotland, Ireland, Aragon, Castile, France, Switzerland, and Italy, preaching the Gospel and converting many. Many biographers believe that he could speak only Valencian, but was endowed with the gift of tongues."
Images of him have some characteristic elements: the tongues of fire, the finger pointed to heaven, a book in his left hand and those wings suggest that he was one of the angels of the Apocalypse. No trumpet?

Timete Deum! quia venit hora iudicii eius…
This quote is from the Book of Revelation, Apocalypse the final book of the New Testament and is central to Christian eschatology.

7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

7 dicens magna voce timete Deum et date illi honorem quia venit hora iudicii eius et adorate eum qui fecit caelum et terram et mare et fontes aquarum
(The Revelation of Saint John the Devine, Chapter 14, 7-9)
