    This looks like a military uniform device of some kind, but I'm just guessing. It's made from either copper or brass and is an inch and one eighth in diameter.There are three missing tabs on the back (you can see where they were in the picture) that apparently bent over to secure the device to something.
    I found it in my back yard with my metal detector today. My house is old and the property has been occupied since the 1800's.

    Any ideas what this is?

      I agree with blunder, these would have been mounted on a leather horse bridal, I probably rotted away years ago since you dug this up.

      We just found the same item in our yard today. We live in a house built in the 1850s!

      Your U.S. item is an Army lapel pin. My father-in-law has the same identical ones.
      he was in the Army Corp of Engineering. in the early 1950's

      You need to look at the back side of your father-in-laws brass. I think you will find a major difference.
