Today I am posting another small beauty. It is a 3-3/4 inch, PG 2/490, Prod #774 vase. You can see for yourself. I have nothing more to say. (2005)

This is a very well known Loetz decor, but still not easily to be assigned to a described "Phenomen Genre". Your assignment to 2/490 may be incorrect, as it would need an orange deminished ground and the blue decor is at the bottom. I would suggest Genre 2/187 which is on "Thea" and shows the hanging blue decor.

kairomalre-I base my assignment of 2/490 on the fact that if the drawing of the globe shade on page 307 of the Hatje Kantz book were to be inverted, as it would be if it were completed as a vase, the blue decor would be at the top. Also the 2/187 does not show the "zipper" pattern. And, not all colors are necessarily mentioned under the Genre designations, as I have a couple of vases with such unnamed colors. I will concede however that since there are significant gaps in the Genre numbering system I could certainly be wrong, and this vase could fall under an undetermined number.

Great example of PG 2/187. This decor was produced in 1913.

The PG 2/187 pictured on page 306 is also a shade, or blown like a globe shade without a pontil and polished rim. If the 2/490 piece on page 307 were inverted so that the opening is at the top, the blue decors would be oriented the same (at the top on both). So far you haven't convinced me yet that this vase is a 2/187, since there is no "zipper" pattern.

When we unveil the new Loetz.com you will not only see several examples of this decor but documented PN's for many of them. I know Cantz mentions Neumann & Co (com 1443) as the first customer to order this decor in 1902 but the majority of the shapes for PG 2/187 with a decoration that looks like your vase start around 1910 and go through 1913. I drop into CW only occasionally as I have been spending a gazillion hours working on the site (which we are close to unveiling) but if I can break away I will try to see if I can find the shape for your vase.
