This was my second lucky find of the week. I found this at the Highway 127 yard sale this morning. I believe these are pretty rare. The hasps are dated May 21, 78. The seller said that he had just bought it from a man who had it in his basement since the 1950s. He put it there after inheriting it and just left it. I believe it. It smells pretty musty and was covered in dust and dirt. Someone has done a restoration on it at some point. It was covered, possibly in leather, originally. I found bits of it around some of the hardware. The drawers are covered on the inside with canvas or some type of fabric that has been painted white. It has two smaller drawers and one large drawer and a storage compartment in the bottom.

I paid $50 for it, which I thought was a really good price.

Superb trunk at a superb price. The hardware on this one ifs fabulous!!! Great look to it -- I am not sure how rare these are but I know I have not seen one up for grabs in the three years that I have been diligently looking!!! (never mind for 50 bucks) You are getting quite a collection going!!! (really nice ones too)

Thanks Trunkman. I'm just about out of space, but I love finding them. I was surprised this one was so cheap. This yard sale extends across several states and people set up booths, similar to an outdoor flea market. I think that's the only reason that I found it. It wasn't at a regular yard sale.

Yes, but you won the prize as you were the first to grab it. I liken it to fishing. You brought home the big one! Lots of fun!

I just bought a trunk strikingly similar to this today at a yard sale. I was looking online for anything about it and came across yours. I'd be willing to sell it if I had an idea it's worth. It's still in its original state and yes they smell funny!

The locks say Yale and towne co on them. It's so old I can't find any other markings

The prices on them vary pretty dramatically depending on the condition that they are in and the area that you are located.

I'm in Arkansas. It's still sturdy but the bottom floor of it has some rot. Mine opens up and lays flush with the floor. I'm not a collector. I just thought it looked cool. 25$ at a yard sale.

You found a nice dresser trunk at a very good price. In the old catalogs these were called dresser or bureau trunks and they were made mostly from about 1890 to 1920, and they kept using those latches patented in 1878 for a long time. All of the ones I've seen or owned were canvas covered when new. You are right that someone painted over the original paper or fabric, but you could also recover that with some nice fabric if you wanted. These trunks are very useful and great for storage. Great find!

Thanks for the info, TrunkerMarvin. I assumed that the dates on the latches would have been when it was made. Sounds like it's not quite as old as I thought. I'm still learning about trunks. Thanks for the help.

That's funny, passion4trunks! I usually find the best ones when I'm just out looking for junk.
