Still lifes and furniture are collectible and unusual 19th century photography subjects.
Usually furniture represents patent or salesman images.
This particular example dates from about 1885 or 1886 and shows the hardware that was patented by William J. Maddox on 16 JUN 1885 on his Adjustable Reclining Chair (#320,265).
The actual chair differs from the patent drawings, but the hardware design is unmistakable. Often designs were modified and updated as the patent holder took his product to actual production.
